Collaborative Futures Academy 2024: Emotions in Engagement

Applications have now closed!

Hope, fear, anxiety, frustration, curiosity, connection, trust ... engagement work with publics and communities is never just about sharing information. Acknowledging and attending to emotion - among practitioners and participants - is a crucial part of the process. But it's also one of the hardest things to accept, to manage and to document, especially where research training rarely prepares us for these experiences.

This year, the Collaborative Futures Academy brings emotions into the heart of our learning. Over three days our global cohort of engaged researchers and practitioners will reflect together on how we encounter emotions in our work: the connection of thinking, feeling and doing. How can we build and foster empathy? What makes emotions an effective route for connection - and what are the challenges? And how do we respond ethically when faced with moments that are unsettling, difficult - and very human?

Joining CFA'24 will give you the opportunity to

  • gain confidence in working with emotions as an integral part of your engagement practice;
  • practice skills of empathy, active listening and storytelling to enable dialogue based on care and respect;
  • have an insight into how practitioners from across cultures work with emotions in engagement;
  • find global interdisciplinary connections to discuss, develop and reflect on your own research and engagement work.

When is it?

CFA’24 will take place online 21 - 23 May 2024, 9:30-15:30 UTC+1/BST (10:30-16.30 CEST/SAST). Following the Academy, there will optional mentoring and Action Learning sessions (June 2024, date to be confirmed)

What can I expect from the Academy?

The Academy is delivered as a live online learning community, and the working language is English. Each day includes a dynamic mixture of case studies, group sharing, workshops and personal reflection. We build on the expertise of participants with input from international experts and practitioners. Over the course of the Academy, we will jointly produce a short practice guide on "Emotions in Engagement", which captures key insights, reflection tools and practical exercises.

To get a feel for what it is like to take part in CFA, take a look back at our past Academies:

  • Are directly working with researchers to develop Public Engagement or related projects on urgent and important topics
  • Build bridges between communities and researchers in innovative ways
